Information for Complainants

The Texas Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (TBVME) is committed to handling complaints in a fair, thorough, and timely manner. If you have filed a complaint with the Board, you may have questions about the investigation process and what information is available to you.

Investigation Process
Once a complaint is received, it is reviewed to determine whether the Board has jurisdiction and whether the allegations, if proven, would constitute a violation of the Veterinary Licensing Act or Board Rules. If jurisdiction is established, an investigation will be opened. The investigation may include requests for records, witness interviews, and other fact-gathering steps necessary to evaluate the complaint.

Access to Information
As the complainant, you may request general updates about the status of your complaint, such as whether it is under review, in investigation, or has been closed. While the investigation is ongoing, details about the evidence gathered, investigative steps, or preliminary findings cannot be disclosed. This is to protect the integrity of the process and ensure fairness to all parties involved.

Confidentiality of Investigation Files
Under Texas law, complaint and investigation files are confidential and are not public records. This means that, with limited exceptions provided by law, the Board cannot share investigative materials, witness statements, or internal analyses with complainants or the public. Final disciplinary actions, however, are public and are posted on the Board’s website.

Final Outcome
Once the Board has completed its review, you will be notified in writing of the outcome of your complaint. If disciplinary action is taken, it will be reflected in the public records maintained by the Board.

If you have questions about the complaint process or your case status, please contact the Enforcement Division at enforcement@veterinary.texas.gov or 512-305-7555.
