Criminal History and Fingerprinting

Pre-Licensure Criminal History Evaluation

House Bill 963 (2009) authorizes individuals to request a Criminal History Evaluation Letter to assess their eligibility for a license. This applies to:

  • Current students, graduates, or those planning to enroll in an educational program for initial licensure.
  • Individuals with concerns about felony or misdemeanor convictions or deferred adjudications.

Why Request an Evaluation?

If you believe a prior conviction might make you ineligible for licensure, it is recommended to request this evaluation well in advance of taking the licensing examination.

Fingerprinting Requirement

Texas Law (Chapter 801, Occupations Code) mandates fingerprint submission for criminal history checks for:

Important: Fingerprints previously submitted to other agencies (e.g., DPS for a License to Carry Permit) cannot be reused. Active-duty military personnel may continue to renew their licenses without submitting new fingerprints during their service.

Fingerprinting is processed exclusively through IdentoGo Centers:

  1. Enroll Online: Visit IdentoGo.com or call 1-888-467-2080.
  2. Use the service code provided by licensing after you submit your application.
  3. From IdentoGo’s website, you can:
    • Schedule or manage appointments.
    • Find required documents to bring.
    • Locate fingerprinting centers.

For assistance with out-of-state fingerprinting, contact IdentoGo and provide the service code, which will be issued by licensing after you submit your application.

How the Board Uses Your Fingerprints

The Board may use fingerprints to:

  • Monitor arrests or criminal charges.
  • Take disciplinary action for illegal practices related to veterinary medicine or equine dentistry.
  • Pursue action for undisclosed criminal history during application or renewal.

Important: You must report criminal activity within 30 days of its occurrence, as required by Rule 573.70.

The Board and its vendors are committed to protecting your private information.

Consequences of Not Submitting Fingerprints

  • New Licenses: Licenses will not be issued without fingerprint submission.
  • Reinstated Licenses: Licenses will not be reinstated until fingerprints are received.
  • Practicing without a valid license is illegal and may result in disciplinary action.
