Licensing Requirements
Types of Licenses
The Texas State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners (TBVME) issues the following types of licenses:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
- Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)
- Licensed Equine Dental Provider (EDP)
Application Process
To practice in Texas, applicants must pass the State Board Exam (SBE) and meet all licensing requirements. Practicing with an expired license violates state law.
Notice: Starting October 1st, 2018, all applicants are required to submit their fingerprints to the Board before licensure.
ADA Accommodations: Applicants requiring accommodations can submit a request using the ADA Accommodations Request Form.
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Start Your Application
- Create an account and start your application via the Self-Service Licensing Portal.
- Upload required documentation or request issuing entities to send them directly to TBVME.
- Schedule and complete fingerprinting through IdentoGo.
2. Complete Your Application
- Once all required materials are received, you’ll receive your Applicant ID and exam instructions.
- Missing information will be communicated via email or phone.
3. Take the Exam
- The SBE is available online, allowing you to complete it at a time and place that suits you.

4. Receive Your License
- Licenses are issued within 7 business days of receiving a passing score on the SBE.
- You’ll receive your license number and an Authority to Practice Letter.
- Your wall license will be mailed to you and must be displayed in your workplace.
- Processing times depend on how quickly applicants submit required documents.
License Renewals
Renewal reminder emails are sent at least 30 days before expiration, but it is your responsibility to renew on time. Your license expires on the last day of your birth month. You can renew it starting 90 days before the expiration date.
Online Renewal
All renewing users are required to create a new account that matches your old account.
After creating this new account, you can access the system by logging in with your newly created login information. Please contact us if you have any questions or experience any issues with the account creation / login process.
- Using our online system is recommended for faster processing.
Mail Renewal
Paper renewals are no longer accepted, except in exceptional cases. Please create an online account and complete your renewal online.
Additional Information
Avoiding Delays
To avoid delays, ensure your home, practice, and mailing addresses are up to date.
- Report address or employment changes within 60 days using the Notice of Address Change form.
- You may use a P.O. Box for mailing, but a physical home address is also required.
